The Red Door Family Shelter is one of the largest family shelters in the City of Toronto and has been delivering support services to homeless families and abused women and their children for over 25 years. We are currently seeking two Relief Cooks for our two shelters. All selected candidates will have a passion for our work and a commitment to the provision of excellent client services.
Overall Responsibility:
The Relief Cook is responsible for preparing designated meals for Shelter residents on weekends and on scheduled relief shifts.
Reporting Relationship:
This position reports to the Business Coordinators.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Meal Preparation
• Receives information from Shelter Staff regarding special requirements, such as bag lunches for school or special trips, halal, etc.
• Prepares meals, including bag lunches as required
• Prepares meal portions by floor and gives to Shelter Workers to distribute
2. Ordering, Inventory and Stock, and Cleaning
• Cleans kitchen area and working supplies
• Maintains proper storage practices (e.g., separation of food types [meats and vegetables], protection of soft foods [like lettuce])
Minimum Education/General Experience Requirement:
• Some Culinary Arts training
• Six months experience delivering quality food service
• Valid Food Handler Certification is an asset
• Demonstrated experience preparing high volume full course meals
• Ability to plan menus, determine size of food proportions and ensure quality of food
• Ability to prepare meals for individuals with food allergies or special dietary requirements
• Solid oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a diverse environment
