Job Description

JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT MANAGER
LOCATION: GTA

JOB SUMMARY

The ASSISTANT MANAGER works under the direction of the STORE MANAGER and DISTRICT MANAGER: develops, trains, motivates and coaches employees on understanding merchandizing guidelines, promoting customer service, enforcing loss prevention techniques, gaining product knowledge, following company policy and procedures, and maintaining store efficiency; reads and follows guidelines as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the company’s Occupational Health and Safety Guide; opens and closes store and performs all required accompanying tasks; orients new employees to company policies and procedures, store layout and terms of employment; evaluates employees’ performance, writes performance appraisals and sets goals for future performance; notifies Store Manager of concerns and issues regarding store or an employee; assists Store Manager in interviewing and selecting of employees for store.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Develops, trains, motivates and coaches employees on understanding merchandizing guidelines, promoting customer service, enforcing loss prevention techniques, gaining product knowledge, following company policy and procedures, and maintaining store efficiency; provides support to employees with regard to customers’ concerns and unexpected circumstances; supervises sales floor to ensure store operates efficiently and effectively.
2. Reads and follows guidelines as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the company’s Occupational Health and Safety Guide; trains staff on outlined procedures; wears personal protective equipment as required and reminds staff to do the same; corrects an employee if this person is performing work in a dangerous manner which may cause personal injury and/or property damage and formally disciplines employee if behaviour is not rectified; corrects a hazard but if not possible, notifies the appropriate party to rectify the problem; performs health and safety building walkthroughs as scheduled; notifies Human Resources of staff injuries.
3. Opens and closes store and performs all required accompanying tasks.
4. Orients new employees to company policies and procedures, store layout and terms of employment; ensures all new employee paperwork is promptly completed and forwarded to Human Resources Department; implements within designated timeframes all employees’ testing and training.
5. Evaluates employees’ performance, writes performance appraisals and sets goals for future performance; disciplines employees promptly when performance fails to meet expected levels; disciplines and terminates, where necessary, employees who purposely create an unsafe or unhealthy working environment; recommends to Store Manager terminations for employees whose performance consistently fail to meet expected levels.

6. Notifies Store Manager of concerns and issues regarding store or an employee; notifies Human Resources Department of terminations and changes to employees’ store location, etc.; updates Director of Training on weekly basis of concerns, problems and questions with regard to employees’ training; provides Director of Training with progress reports of accomplishments and future goals for employees’ training program.

7. Assists Store Manager in interviewing and selecting of employees for store; performs role of Store Manager, Third Key, Head Cashier or Sales Associate when necessary.

8. Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

1. Ability to apply principles and techniques of training and supervision.
• Knowledge of principles and techniques of training and supervision.
• Ability to plan and organize the activities of others.
• Ability to have ideas accepted and to guide a group or an individual to accomplish a task.
• Ability to motivate others and lead by example.
• Ability to modify leadership style and management approach to reach goal.
2. Ability to express ideas clearly both in written and oral communications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Twelve years of general education or equivalent; and one year of Head Cashier experience within a hard good retail environment.
OR
One year of experience in a Retail Management role.
